Radar area sensor with CAN R2Dx – R2D1 Area Radar, 60 GHz User Manual

Operating instructions

Radar area sensor with CAN

R2Dx

Overview of Intended Use and Application Area

Device Functionality

The device operates using FMCW radar technology, enabling it to monitor an area without contact and detect distance, position, and velocity of stationary and moving objects. It is suitable for both industrial stationary use and mobile use when requirements are fulfilled. Detection range dimensions depend on the target object and are specified in the technical data sheet. Configurations and visualizations can be performed via Vision Assistant or moneo.

Geographical Application Restrictions

The operational frequency and permissible usage of the device vary by country:

  1. USA, Canada, Brazil, Chile: 60 GHz devices are for static applications; 77 GHz devices are approved for vehicular use and airport operations.
  2. Europe, Namibia, South Africa: 60 GHz devices are versatile; 77 GHz devices are for transport and traffic telematics.
  3. Australia, New Zealand: Both 60 GHz and 77 GHz devices can be used flexibly in various applications.
  4. Argentina: 60 GHz devices can be used widely; 76 GHz devices are for vehicular use.
  5. India: 76 GHz devices have versatile application options.
  6. Japan: 77 GHz devices are diverse in application.
  7. Mexico: 60 GHz devices are versatile; 77 GHz for transport and traffic purposes.

Device must only be operated in approved countries, and national approval restrictions must be communicated if the device changes hands.

Operating Conditions

The device’s safety follows EN IEC 61010-1:2020+A11:2020 standards and is designed for indoor and outdoor industrial environments, subject to conditions such as non-condensing relative humidity up to 90%, altitudes up to 2000 m, and a pollution degree of 2. The device may cause radio interference in domestic areas, necessitating EMC screening measures where needed.

Application Area Constraints

The device relies on high-frequency electromagnetic waves reflected by objects, with detection quality varying by object material and size (RCS value). Metals and stone walls with higher RCS may affect detection accuracy by overshadowing smaller or non-metal objects.

Impermissible Use

Use beyond technical specifications or outside normal function is not permitted. The device lacks compliance with machinery safety standards, meaning it can’t be used as a safety component. Hazardous area use and reliance on non-redundant circuit self-monitoring is dangerous. Immediate removal of damaged products is advised, as misuse can lead to severe injury or death.

Getting Started

Quick setup involves installing the device for unobstructed detection, installing and connecting through CANfox software, and configuring settings with Vision Assistant. These tools are downloadable from www.ifm.com.

Function and Measuring Principle

The device uses FMCW radar to determine object distance, position, speed, and direction by emitting waves that are reflected back and evaluated by the device’s receiving antenna.

Operating Modes Summary

The device configuration is exclusively possible through a CAN interface, and the necessary software can be downloaded from www.ifm.com.

Some devices allow setting up to two different operating modes, which vary in maximum distance, distance resolution, maximum velocity, and velocity resolution. However, not all devices support changing the operating mode. Specific operating modes and detailed technical data for each device can be found in the respective technical data sheet.

Note that if the velocity limits are exceeded, the counter resets, meaning the measured value will not reflect the actual velocity.

Mounting Instructions Summary

  1. Ensure mechanical decoupling to prevent vibration interference with the sensor during installation.
  2. Avoid installing the device in areas with high pollution or painting the device.
  3. Provide strain relief for the appropriate M12 socket.
  4. For use in high humidity areas, refer to the technical data sheet for specific instructions.
  5. Install the device to minimize access, preventing damage and unauthorized handling, and accommodate occasional mechanical adjustments.
  6. Avoid placing the device near strong HF emission sources like welding transformers, as these can impact device performance.
  7. Choose appropriate mounting accessories for optimal installation, ensuring no interference from large metallic objects near the sensor’s sensing face.
  8. Keep unwanted objects out of the sensor’s field of view (FOV) and comply with horizontal and vertical angles of aperture requirements.
  9. Ensure lateral elements remain outside detection angles.
